History of Thanh Ha Pottery Village Hoi An Vietnam
According to legend, Thanh Ha pottery’s progenitors originated in Thanh Hoa. These folks moved to Hoi An in the 16th century. They discovered that the clay supply on the Thu Bon Riverbank was ideal for the manufacture of pottery. As a result, they have been establishing Thanh Ha Pottery Village since then.
Famous artisans from Thanh Ha Village were called to join the construction team in the palace when the Nguyen Dynasty started building the capital in Hue. Thanh Ha Pottery wares began to appear in Hue Citadel from that time.
The most prosperous period for Thanh Ha Pottery has to be the 17th and 18th centuries when Hoi An was a bustling trading port with a big population. Bowls, pots, cups, jars, teapots, and other items created in Thanh Ha Pottery Village Hoi An are both cheap and durable. They are now found in the old house of Hoi An and nearby areas from Hue to Binh Dinh. Not only that, but trade ships anchoring at Hoi An’s ancient harbor allowed it to cross the border into Asian and Western countries.
Process of creating Thanh Ha Pottery Products
Thanh Ha Pottery Village Hoi An is different from other ones throughout the country in that the entire production process is completely done by hand.
Clay is known as the primary raw material used to create unique ceramic products. It is mined from the Thu Bon riverbed, then cleaned and kneaded.
The craftsmen will form the product once the earthwork is completed. The clay will be placed on the rotating table with two persons. The table is spun by one person using his foot while the other shapes the clay into the required form using his experienced skillful hands.
Dry it in the sun after shaping so that the ceramic product may solidify and be trimmed again by the craftsmen. The ceramic should then be dried a second time in order to stiffen it.
Finally, depending on the manufacturer’s chosen color, place the ceramic in the kiln for around 2 days and 2 nights to make the final product.
