Huyen Tran Cultural Center (also known by Hue people as the Huyen Tran Princess Temple) is located at address 151, Thien Thai Street, An Tay Ward, Hue City, about 14km from the city center.

Huyen Tran Princess Bio

Huyen Tran Princess is the daughter of Tran Nhan Tong King and Kham Tu Queen. In the summer of the Year of the Horse (1306), in order to make peace with her neighbors, Princess Huyen Tran had to break up with her personal love to go to the Champa Kingdom, marry Che Man King and become Queen Paramesvari.

The betrothal gift that the King of Champa offered to his father-in-law Tran Nhan Tong was the two continents of O and Chau Ly – the land from the Southern Bank of the Hieu River, Quang Tri to the Northern bank of the Thu Bon River, Quang Nam – which had been merged into Dai Viet.

A year later, Che Man King passed away, according to the custom of the Champa Kingdom, the queen will have to go to the cremation pyre to mourn with her husband. Tran Anh Tong King knew that, so he sent Tran Khac Chung general to pretend to visit to save the princess from returning. In the 8th month of the year Mau Than (1308), after returning to the land of Thang Long, the Huyen Tran princess took refuge in the Door of Buddha, whose name is Huong Trang.

In 2006, the temple of Princess Huyen Tran was started to be built to honor the merits of the person who had expanded the nation’s borders. In 2007 it officially operated to serve tourists to this day.

What to see at Huyen Tran Cultural Center?

From the outside leading in, visitors will first see four large pillars with stone unicorn sculptures at their bottoms, then three large courtyards paved with famous Bat Trang bricks. After that, there is a bridge crossing the lake like a miniature version of the Trung Dao Bridge spanning the Thai Dich Lake in front of the Thai Hoa Palace of the Hue Citadel.

Next is the three-door gate and the innermost is the shrine- where the bronze statue of Huyen Tran Princess on the throne is 2.37 m high, cast by talented artisans of Duc ward – Hue city.

The rear of the shrine worships Doan Nhu Hai, who is said to have prepared a petition to help absolve Tran Anh Tong King from the wrath of Nhan Tong Emperor, he was also the first Vietnamese mandarin under the king’s order to come to manage O and Ly when these two provinces were merged from Champa into Dai Viet.

Hoa Binh bell tower has a height of 7m built on top of Ngu Phong along with a bronze bell weighing 1.6 tons and 2.16m high, crafted by artisans of Duc Ward.

The bell rings as if spreading into the quiet world, bringing people moments of relaxation and peace. On the way to the Peace Bell Tower, you will also meet the giant Maitreya Buddha statue with a permanent full smile on his lips.

Next to the Huyen Tran shrine is the temple of Tran Nhan Tong King who has made great contributions to nation-building and defense, the father of Huyen Tran Princess.

There is a statue of Tran Nhan Tong Buddha Emperor in pure red bronze, 3m high, weighing two tons. In front of the majestic temple, there is a couple of dragons which are known as the longest dragons in Vietnam with a length of 108 meters, equivalent to the height of Ngu Phong mountain.

Tran Nhan Tong King, the founder of Truc Lam Zen sect – Huyen Cultural Center has completed construction to turn this place into a spiritual and cultural tourist area, a Zen tourist address of Vietnam.

Opening Hours & Entrance Tickets

The Huyen Tran Princess Temple Hue opens every day from 7 am to 5 pm even on Tet Holiday. To admire the Huyen Tran Temple, you have to buy an entrance ticket. The ticket price costs 40.000 VND (roughly 2 USD)/per person. Children under 10 years old are free of charge.

On the morning of February 9, the Huyen Tran Temple Festival – the Year of Tiger 2022, was kicked off at Huyen Tran Cultural Center (Ngu Phong Mountain, An Tay Ward, Hue City) by the Provincial Department of Culture and Sports.
