Introduction

Duyet Thi Duong is the name of a royal theater in the forbidden city (Hue Imperial citadel) of the Nguyen Dynasty. This is a large-scale theater, the oldest royal theater in Vietnam.

It was used to perform theatrical arts, mainly performing Tuong (Classical drama), to serve the emperor, the royal family, the court relatives, and foreign envoys who had relations with the imperial court.

Duyet Thi Duong History

Duyet Thi Duong was built in the 7th year of Minh Mang (1826) inside the Forbidden City. This is a place dedicated to the emperor, his royalties, the officials, and the envoys to see art performances (mainly Royal Tuong plays).

“Duyet Thi Duong” is understood as a house for viewing art performances from which people can contemplate good and right things.

The Hue Royal Theater was renovated many times under the Nguyen Dynasty. In 1962, when the government of the Republic of Vietnam renovated and repaired Duyet Thi Duong to serve as the teaching classes of Hue National School of Music, the surrounding monuments were demolished to build accommodation for teachers and students.

The structure of the Hue Royal Theater is changed and is no longer the same. After many years of war, natural disasters, and human ignorance, Duyet Thi Duong was seriously degraded.

Duyet Thi Duong Architecture
